A Day in the Life
Pacific Quest at Reed’s Bay is among the most clinically innovative outdoor therapeutic programs for young adults in the country. Located directly on the Hilo Bay coastline on the Big Island of Hawaii, the site encompasses five acres of large open spaces with botanical gardens, freshwater ponds and private Pacific ocean access. The program boasts an 8,000 sq. ft. facility comprised of bunkhouses, a commercial kitchen and recreational spaces for yoga, group sessions and gathering. Additionally, our southern location has acres of fruit trees and farms rows with mountain and hillside views that evoke and sense of calm and wellbeing.
Pacific Quest at Reed’s Bay focuses on providing sustainable living skills to young adults by offering a holistic, yet highly clinical, approach to treatment, individualized for each young adult. Life at Pacific Quest is a community living experience, providing young adults an opportunity to practice relevant and essential life skills. We provide a structured environment that leaves room to achieve individual goals and make personal choices. From the moment they arrive, each young adult is held responsible and accountable for his or her own actions.
Days consist of many components: self-care and hygiene, meal preparation and planning, horticultural therapy, personal reflection, individual and group therapy, group initiatives, communication, journaling, goal development and evaluation, wellness education, physical activity and community service. Within each of these components, each young adult’s individualized treatment plan is reflected in all daily activities. Activities vary according to individual needs.
When appropriate, young adults embark on group outings to explore cultural, historical and scenic areas of the Big Island. Day outings include visits to various beaches (white, black and green sand), Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens, Mauna Kea Summit Observatory and many other special and noteworthy places. Outings also serve as a chance for our young adults to practice newly learned skills off campus and interact with the community.
During the later stages of the program, young adults participate in various community service objectives designed to foster a sense of stewardship. Pacific Quest has partnered with several local groups to provide rich opportunities for young adults to serve others through philanthropic work and volunteering.
