About Pacific Quest

In 2004, we set out to create a new, integrated therapy program for teens and young adults. Our mission: to provide the tools and skills they need for lifelong, sustainable, and positive change. We’ve been family-owned and operated since day one; we plan to stay that way.

History of Pacific Quest

In the late 1990s, PQ’s founders discovered the personal and professional satisfaction of working with teens in outdoor therapy. In 2003, they relocated their families to the Big Island and started developing a new and integrative program. They envisioned a nurturing and safe outdoor environment—a space for teens and young adults to experience, practice, and build new ideas and skills through a strengths- and community-based approach.

Today, we’ve realized that vision with over three thousand families from all over the world.

This approach has attracted a community of experienced professionals with a passion for innovative, evidence-based modalities and highly individualized treatment experiences.

Our Mission

Pacific Quest Cultivates Change in our residents, families, employees and community.

Our Core Focus
We disrupt cycles of internalized stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and other mental health challenges. By equipping our students with the tools they need to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives; we’re cultivating change and promoting sustainable growth.

Diversity & Inclusion

PQ was founded on the belief that the mental, emotional and physical health of every individual is an essential path to realizing their own purpose and healing themselves and their community. It is in the growth and transformation of the self that a person can then begin to change the culture of the community around them. PQ was founded purposefully in a place that offers a deep connection to culture so that our staff, participants, families, and colleagues can recognize the importance of it, and the idea that we can learn from other communities. The Rites of Passage model, deep in our roots, teaches the importance of our diverse lives and communities, and our capacity to change and grow. Our treatment model promotes connection and acceptance as young people begin to understand themselves and open their hearts and minds to the world outside their own needs. Working on the land, the view becomes wider, we see the bigger picture of trauma, healing, and growth.

It is our belief that change happens every day, not just in one moment. We must live what we want to see in the world. We embrace and honor adversity, change, and progress. Pacific Quest is a place where ALL people—regardless of race, religion, or gender—have an opportunity to grow and learn. We have and will always examine our practices in sustainability and diversity.

After 3 years of school avoidance, residential and hospital stays, screen addiction and risky behavior, we didn't know how to help or talk to our 16 year old daughter. Pacific Quest seemed different from other programs we had considered for her, so we were hopeful for some positive change when we sent her 5 thousand miles away. After the first few weeks it was clear that the program and clinical staff were even better than we had hoped. Their holistic approach to health, emphasizing healthy diet, sleep, exercise and time in nature, balancing meds and supplements had an immediate positive impact. The care, kindness and respect that the highly qualified clinical team showed our daughter, allowed her to trust and be vulnerable in her individual therapy as well as our family sessions. She learned so much about herself, her emotions and how to manage them, while we learned about better ways to communicate with her, within our family and how to repair broken trust. She is now attending an alternative boarding school, and for the first time in a long time, we are optimistic for her future. Hawaii is a magical place, and all the staff at PQ, the therapists, medical team and program team make Pacific Quest a truly magical healing place. I highly recommend it.

Our teen is currently in his 8th week at Pacific Quest and we have been very happy with the care and support he has received so far. We have seen significant progress since he first started the program. His therapist is a good fit and we receive feedback each week about our son's progress. I am glad that we chose this program with the help of an educational consultant.

Pacific Quest is a blessing, a God-send. At first I was against an RTC placement & the long distance from mainland USA. However, PQ has a team of exceptional, experienced, well-trained, & loving personnel. In about 90 days, they achieved clear & immense progress for my child & me. Where once I had little to no hope for a positive relationship with my child, now hope is clear for our short-term & long-term relationship. PQ is a blessing & well-worth the costs, aka investment.

Overall, we were satisfied with the level and type of treatment our daughter received at PQ. This was a necessary step after we had tried many other avenues to help her stabilize. We appreciated the holistic approach to medicine, food and supplements to help support a healthier way of living. The therapy and group interaction was also very helpful. Aside from our daughter's treatment, we, as parents were also following a parallel process to rethink the family dynamic. It was almost as much about our daughter as it was about us. Lots of parent groups, calls and family therapy to change our approach and learn how to handle situations in a better way. About 2/3 of the way thru the 90 day program, we attend the Family Program (Fam Pro) 3 day intensive. It turned out to be a very valuable use of time and allowed our family to connect and understand each other much differently. We really connected with Dr. Rob Gent and this provided a path to deeper understanding of our daughter and her mindset. There were a few bumps in the road and not everything PQ did was perfect. Nobody is, I suppose. But we provided feedback to them and hopefully they can learn new ways as well. We all can...
