Andrew Vispo, MS, LMFT
Andrew Vispo is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over ten years of therapeutic and outdoor education experience. He earned his BA in Psychology from State University of New York (SUNY), and his Masters of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iona College, in New Rochelle, NY.
Andrew was born and raised in New York and spent his early counseling career in Manhattan empowering youth at risk and strengthening families to support them in healthier ways. Specializing in work with adolescents from culturally diverse backgrounds with a variety of mental health, identity and adjustment problems, Andrew uses a Solution-Focused, Family Systems framework and experiential methods to elicit positive change. Andrew believes that people learn best through experience, and serves as coach and counselor for his clients as they confront challenges. Andrew has experience working with adolescents with emotional dysregulation, family systems issues, identity confusion, relationship and connection issues. Andrew’s approach is engaging, nurturing and collaborative; as such he works together with students, families, consultants, school personnel and other supportive adults on creative and sustainable solutions aimed to help young people develop a deeper connection to self, family and community.
Later in his career Andrew traveled to Shanghai and Cambodia where he received advanced certification in family therapy techniques and provided consultation and training to graduate students of family therapy. While traveling overseas he discovered wilderness therapy. Soon after, he left his comfort zone in New York to set out on his own rites of passage journey, doing therapeutic work with youth and their families in different wilderness settings across the United States. Andrew led outdoor education, leadership and team building experiences in California and Montana where he emphasized the significance of creative problem solving, family dynamics, healthy communication, and group roles. Andrew came to Pacific Quest to integrate nature-based and holistic approaches with his Family Systems and Solution-Focused methods.
Andrew is an avid cyclist who is constantly seeking new adventures. Having rode a fixed gear bike across Japan, his intrepid personality and fearless approach to life engages even our most challenging students and motivates real change. Andrew also uses his adventurous spirit to help his students complete personal projects to find meaning and purpose in and outside of the garden. Dr. Lorraine Freedle, Clinical Director states, “I can see why Andrew quickly became a popular choice. He is passionate, intelligent, creative, funny and tenacious about finding solutions. He connects well with students and his family therapy skills are exceptional.”
When Andrew has time to himself he loves staying in touch with friends and family. He also likes to indulge in his creative side with music, spending time outdoors, cycling, and getting creative in the kitchen.
