Accredited Academic Curriculum
Academic credit is available to students in both our adolescent and young adult programs that have not yet completed high school. Pacific Quest students have the opportunity to complete seven academic courses for a total of four (4) credits.
The courses include:
Career and Technical Education – Horticulture Pathway (0.5 credits)
Health Education – Health Education (0.5 credits)
Language Arts – English and Language Arts (0.5 credits)
Physical Education – Lifetime Fitness (1.0 credit)
Science – Environmental Literacy (0.5 credits)
Social Sciences – Hawaiian Culture (0.5 credits)
Electives – Psychology (0.5 credits)
We may also be able to tailor a specific class to a student’s individual journey and provide specialized accommodations for learning differences.
The courses are aligned with Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum and National standards, providing a rounded educational experience that incorporates both academic learning and therapeutic growth.
The credits will be transferable credits issued through Pacific Quest’s accreditation with AdvanceEd and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement.
Career and Technical Educational (0.5 credits)
Pacific Quest’s Horticulture Pathway course provides our students in-depth instruction in the field of organic and sustainable horticulture. Topics include plant classification, identification, plant physiology, soil science, plant reproduction, as well as design, installation and maintenance in nursery, landscape and floriculture industries. The course is aligned with Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum and the standards of the Association for Career and Technical Education.
Health Education (0.5 credits)
Pacific Quest’s Health Education course encourages our students to develop an understanding of the nature of health – its development and its maintenance. The primary goal of this course is to teach our students how to make health-enhancing decisions. It investigates the aspects of mental, emotional and physical health with emphasis on the knowledge for development for healthy living, optimal wellness and sustainable growth. The course is aligned with Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum and the National Health Education Standards.
Language Arts (0.5 credits)
English and Language Arts
Pacific Quest’s English and Language Arts course emphasizes the fundamental language skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, language acquisition and critical thinking. Throughout the course, our students apply these skills to a wide variety of literary genres and informational texts. In addition, our students participate in analytical dialogue, respond to a wide variety of writing prompts and write synthesized essays that incorporate information and perspectives from multiple sources. The course is aligned with Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum and the Common Core Curriculum.
Physical Education (1.0 credit)
Throughout Pacific Quest’s Physical Education course, our students enhance their knowledge of a variety of physical activities, such as hiking, Pilates, kayaking, meditation, swimming, yoga, as well as independent and group physical activities, through an engaging syllabus; which is aligned with both Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum and the standards of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
Science (0.5 credits)
Pacific Quest’s Environmental Literacy course provides students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies required to understand the intricate interrelationships of the natural world. Throughout the course, our students identify and analyze environmental issues, evaluate the risks associated with these issues and examine solutions for resolving or preventing them. The course is aligned with Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum and the National Association of Environmental Education’s guidelines for learning.
Social Sciences (0.5 credits)
Pacific Quest’s course on Hawaiian culture provides our students with an understanding of the Hawaiian people. Throughout the course our students focus on traditional Hawaiian culture and society, including migration, voyaging, origin, geology, ecology, fishing and farming, religion and society. At the end of the course our students understand the statement that great and numerous is the knowledge of the Hawaiians – Ua lehulehu a manomano ka ‘ikena a ka Hawai’i. The course is based upon Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum and standards approved by the Western Association of Colleges and Schools.
Electives (0.5 credits)
Pacific Quest’s course on psychology provides our students with methods for understanding biopsychological, developmental, and cognitive functioning in humans, as well as individual and group variations in behavior. By the end of the course, students know through their own experience this psychological truth, articulated by Abraham Maslow: “What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.” This course is aligned with Pacific Quest’s therapeutic curriculum, the Common Core Curriculum and the National Standards for High School Psychology Curricula.
ACCOMMODATIONS AND INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING
Pacific Quest integrates Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and accommodations for students’ learning differences, such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Dysphasia and Aphasia, Nonverbal Learning Disorders, ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and others.
Access to accommodations assures that our students have equal access to our Student Curriculum and therefore, equal access to success.
